In the 1986  book 'My Husband, My Friend'  Neile states that they lived at 1, Chester  Square during the filming of THE WAR LOVER (page 112).

Chester Square near Victoria Station...1962

"Hi Don. The house pictured behind Steve is number 1 Chester Square. Confusingly this is a mid terrace house. The other pictures show the larger corner house number 80.

80 and no1 are directly opposite each other as the Square goes around anti-clockwise from the lowest to high numbers. I have worked in the Belgravia area for 40 years in real estate. I seem to recall that number 80 was the house owned by Lord and Lady Russell"

I have recently  purchased and read Marshall Terrill's book, 'Steve McQueen - A Tribute to  the King of Cool and on page 90 there is a copy of a letter Steve wrote to Hedda re: missing 'California very  much' with the address at the top of the page reading : 80, Chester Square,  London S.W.1 (5th December 1961).

Elizabeth Osborn - personal assistant to Steve McQueen during the filming of the War Lover...

"Dear Don. The interior photographs are indeed of number 80 Chester Square because of the corner double aspect which has been conclusively identified here. Good luck with the ongoing history."

If the “meeting shot” is in one of the two Chester Square houses (but perhaps it’s another place in London), it is the 80 which is the only one where there can be a room in an angle with one window in each perpendicular wall...

Neile states that they lived at 1 Chester Square and NOT 80 Chester Square but she may well have been confused as 80, Chester Square was opposite 1, Chester Square...

80, Chester Square

80 Chester Square occupies one of the finest positions on the square benefiting from uninterrupted

westerly views along the beautifully maintained square gardens. Grade II listed. Approximately 686 sq

m (7,384 sq ft) This key corner building is one of the largest houses in Chester Square and has a

grand portico entrance with full width entrance hall. The house is integrated with the mews to the rear

which provides a double garage. As well as an elegant first floor drawing room with exceptional views

of Chester Square, there is also a first floor family room, passenger lift and roof terrace. There are good transport links with Victoria station approximately 0.3 miles

away and Sloane Square station approximately 0.5 miles away.

"Dear Don
Well done finding that 1958 archive photograph of 80 Chester Square. It is indeed correct that the side window in the first floor drawing has since been bricked over. An unusual decision to remove the double aspect, additional light and sunshine from the principal room. The house sold last year for £18 million" (14.11.18)
