Rat Pack cohort Sammy Davis, Jr. was originally slated to play McQueen's role, but Sinatra yanked it away after Davis mildly criticized Sinatra during a radio interview. McQueen was mainly noted at the time for the television series Wanted: Dead or Alive and the horror movie The BlobNever So Few marked his introduction to working with director John Sturges, who went on to cast McQueen in his breakout role the following year, as second lead in The Magnificent Seven, and later as the motorcycle-jumping lead in the classic The Great Escape.”

Continuity mistakeIn the scene where we see Steve McQueen in a jeep waiting for the plane to taxi, he is chewing gum. He then he takes the gum out and sticks it on the top part of the windscreen frame of the jeep. In the next shot the jeep arrives where the plane is and there is no sign of the gum on the windscreen frame.”

McQueen never stands still, he is always moving or fidgeting

 or "catching flies"...

“McQueen's character is fairly superfluous, other than adding someone engaging to watch and a mildly interesting character - plus a somewhat inventive fighting technique early on. It would appear that Sturges wanted to include McQueen in the film somewhere. By this point McQueen had perfected the art of 'doing something in the background' when he wasn't overly important in a scene, hence why he always managed to retain your focus by swatting a mosquito on his neck or playing with his gun, regardless of whether you should be looking at him or not.”

1) cleaning his gun

2) taking his gun apart

3) moving his arm

4) sitting down

5) looking around

6) removing his belt as he leaves the scene
